Melmoth is a small town situated in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Melmoth was a ‘gold rush’ town, founded in 1888 and named after Sir Melmoth Osborn, the resident commissioner of Zululand at the time. The town was established in the Mthonjaneni district after the annexation of Zululand by the United Kingdom in 1887. Melmoth is essentially regarded as a good base for travellers wanting to visit places of interest close to the town, all with an hour’s drive.
The Melmoth area contains one of the largest conservancies in KwaZulu-Natal, which covers an approximate area of 85,000 hectares.The Melmoth Conservancy was placed in the top three in the South African Conservation Awards and top in Natal.The district is absolutely full of animals and the most extraordinary of bird types making the area a major bird sanctuary of the Zululand Birding Route.
