Ermelo Information
|
Ermelo is situated in the upper reaches of the Vaal River, about 1 720m above sea level. Ermelo lies in the midst of varying topography, superb layout and vivid green flora. Together with its high rainfall Ermelo is unmistakably known as the garden town of Mpumalanga. This is been confirmed by the tranquil acorn trees, pin oaks, cedars, wattle and pine plantations in the vicinity.
The Nooitgedacht research station of the department of Agriculture, 4km from Ermelo, conducts research into crop production and animal husbandry. There is large-scale afforestation (pine, water and blue gum) in the eastern parts of the district. Several large mines extract coal and the district is the country’s main source of anthracite and torbanite.
