South African Attractions

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain range overlooking Cape Town and is a prominent tourist attraction. Visitors can hike or take the cable-way to the top. The main vegetation of the mountain is the unique and rich Cape fynbos, which forms part of the Cape Floral Region protected areas. These protected areas are a World Heritage Site, and an estimated 2,200 species of plants are found on the mountain alone. Amongst these species are many kinds of proteas. The Table Mountain Cableway takes passengers from the lower cable station on Tafelberg Road, about 302 m above sea level, to the plateau at the top of the mountain. Robben Island is located about 11 kilometres off the coast of Cape Town and is about a kilometre wide. Robben Island is most famous for that it was here that former South African President Nelson Mandela, alongside many other political prisoners, spent decades imprisoned during the apartheid era. Today the island is a popular tourist destination and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. It is reached by ferry from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town and is open throughout the year, weather permitting, and tours of the island and prison are led by guides who were formerly prisoners there. uShaka Marine World is a theme park located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It comprises 4 sections, uShaka Sea World, uShaka Wet 'n Wild, uShaka Beach and uShaka Village Walk. It is the 5th largest aquarium in the world boasting 32 tanks totaling 17,500 cubic meters of water. The sea creatures found in the aquarium range from small sea horses all the way through to sharks and dolphins. Gold Reef City is designed to be an authentic reproduction of Johannesburg in the years of the gold pioneers. A train circles the park enabling a quick perusal of the facilities.There are many shops all of which are decorated in the "old" style of "brookie lace," with pressed ceilings. There is a "turn of the Century" Hotel where the style of the era is reproduced and the same "old" feel extends to the costumes of the staff as well as the style of restaurants and bars. A popular attraction is the Gold Reef City Tribal Dancers who perform twice daily during the week, and three times daily at weekends. In addition to these appearances certain members perform the popular Gum Boot Dance and give a Marimba Show. The park is built around the number 14 shaft of The Crown Mines. This shaft held the world shaft sinking record in 1969 when the sinking team drilled and blasted 77.5 meters through quartzite in 30 days. Gold Reef City offers visitors the opportunity to take a ride down this famous shaft. The Apartheid Museum is a museum complex in Johannesburg, South Africa dedicated to illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa. The museum was designed by an architectural consortium, which was made out of several leading firms. The building was designed to reflect the South African experience and to be centred around a garden designed to replicate the indigenous Veld. The exhibits include film footage, photographs, text panels, and artefacts.
